For writing, our Year 1 and 2 pupils follow the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum.
Our Nursery and Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.
Reading and Writing
At Whitehall Infant School we use the Read Write Inc programme to teach phonics, reading and writing across the school.
Please click on the attached for a practical explanation of the Read Write Inc programme RWI Presentation for Parents
Children are systematically taught the 44 sounds and learn to:
- decode texts effortlessly so all their resources can be used to comprehend what they read
- spell effortlessly so that all their resources can be directed towards composing their writing
The children are assessed each half term and are grouped according to their reading ability. Read Write Inc lessons take place for an hour each day and involve practising letter-sounds, reading and spelling words using familiar sounds, and reading and writing about texts at their level.
We also like to encourage a love of books. All classes have a reading corner and non-fiction library and children choose a selection of books as their class favourites. Class teachers hear children read, and children are encouraged to read at home as often as possible.

In Year Two, children who have completed the Read Write Inc programme, move on to Read Write Inc 'Literacy and Language' and alongside the Read Write Inc 'Spelling' this ensures they learn all of the skills they need to master the Key Stage One curriculum.
